William J. Cooney, age 79, a resident of Marian Place in Monroe, MI passed away Monday, October 27, 2008 at Fountain View of Monroe where he had been for the past 5 weeks. Bill had been in poor health since January of this year. Bill was born July 26, 1929 in Detroit, MI the son of the late Charles and Dorothy (McCartney) Cooney. Bill was a graduate of Detroit Catholic Central High School. After high school Bill entered the US Army and served his country proudly during the Korean War. Bill lived in Detroit most of his life and was employed as the Circulation Manager for the Detroit News for 42 years from which he retired in 1990. During his life Bill enjoyed playing baseball and hockey. Bill also enjoyed spending time at his cabin in Canada where he loved to boat and fish. During the winter he enjoyed relaxing in the Florida sun. Bill is survived his brother and sister in law Charles J. and Ruth Cooney of Luna Pier, MI and 8 nieces and nephews. Sadly, Bill was preceded in death by his sister Donna Benton. Bill's family will receive friends on Thursday from 6-8 PM in the Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 S. Telegraph Rd. in Monroe, where the Rosary will be recited at 7:30 PM. On Friday October 31, 2008 a Memorial Mass celebrating Bill's life will be held at 10:00 AM at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Erie, MI. Fr. Frederick Kalaj pastor of the church will officiate.
