Velma L. Sype, age 94, died at the Lutheran Home of Monroe on Wednesday morning, August 4, 2010. Born December 8, 1915, in Rosewood, Ohio, she was the middle child of Glenn Buck and Zelia (Buroker) Buck. She spent her early years in Ohio and moved to Michigan with her family as an adult. She married Carl A. Sype on November 25, 1944; he preceded her in death on December 4, 1987, She was a longtime member of Holy Ghost Lutheran Church in Monroe, participating at various times in the adult choir, the handbell choir, and various Bible study groups. She also was involved for several years in a number of senior citizens' bowling leagues in Monroe. She was preceded in death by a brother, Howard Buck of Flat Rock, Michigan, and a sister, Phyllis Runkle of St. Paris, Ohio. She is survived by a daughter, Gail E. Sype of Saginaw, Michigan; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Loyd and Ivy Sype of Maybee; Maxine Evans of Monroe; William and Bonnie Sype of Monroe; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Also survived by a special friend, Eunice Hansen, also of the Lutheran Home of Monroe.
Visitation will be held on Friday from 4-8 PM in the Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 S. Telegraph in Monroe. On Saturday, August 7, 2010 she will lie in state at Holy Ghost Lutheran Church from 12 noon until funeral services celebrating her life at 1:00 PM. The Rev. Larry K. Loree Sr. pastor of the church will officiate. Interment will follow at Gethsemane Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Holy Ghost Lutheran Church of Monroe or to the Lutheran Homes of Michigan.
