Ulus F. Bussell, age 91, of Monroe, passed away Tuesday, August 8, 2023 at his daughter's home, surrounded by his family.
Ulus was born August 10, 1931 in Cumberland Gap, TN; he was the son of Henley and Sarah Jane (Maples) Bussell. He married Judy M. Stokes October 17, 1953 in Angola, Indiana, they had celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary before she passed away January 14, 2022.
He served in the US Army from 1951 until his honorable discharge in 1953. While in service in Korea he earned one Bronze Star and a Purple Heart.
He worked for Consolidated Paper Company for 22 years and then a Dana Corporation for 4 years before retiring in 1980.
Ulus was a member of Grape Missionary Baptist Church and enjoyed gardening, hunting and watching TV, especially wrestling.
He is survived by three children, Lynda Sonak of Monroe, Lora Butler of Newport and Henley Carl Bussell of Monroe; ten grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren, Elianna Yoder and Jonah Hoffman-Sonak and a sister, Lorene (Estil) McBee of Niceville, FL.
In addition to his wife, Ulus is preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Zelda Bussell; a grandson, Michael Bussell; five brothers and six sisters.
Visitation will be held on Monday, August 14, 2023 from 2 to 8 p.m. at Bacarella Funeral Home 1201 S. Telegraph Rd., Monroe, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday with Rev. Roy Southerland officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park with military honors by VFW Post 1138, Monroe.
