Timothy Merlyn Kuehnlein, Sr. of Frenchtown Township, Monroe, Michigan passed peacefully into the life hereafter with family and friends near and far at his bedside on Sunday, December 15, 2024 at the University of Michigan Hospital, Ann Arbor due to complications of the heart.
Known affectionately as Tim, Timmy, Senior, Porky, and Uncle Punkin, he was salt of the earth and a jack of all trades with a wealth of practical knowledge, a life-long learner and teacher, and with an insatiable curiosity and desire to help others, including a wide circle of family and friends with whom he enthusiastically shared life's journey at various stages along the way.
An avid fisherman and sailor, Tim participated in the Port Huron to Mackinac races three times. He approached life with passion, a resounding love for life, and humor. His favorite expressions: "S_ _t happens. What's our Plan B and C? and Let's just wing it and see what happens." A kind and gentle soul with a heart of gold, he was a kind of man's man, one with a deep and unabashed compassion for others, their unique character, and the nuances of life.
He spent much of his life hunting, trapping, camping, snowmobiling, and experimenting with homemade wine, sausage, and spices—including the beloved "Grandma Kuehnlein's Secret Recipe." Hosting perch and walleye fish fries with his catch and butchering and processing deer in his pole barn were among his many joys.
A descendant of a long line of German and Czech heritage, he was always tinkering with something and ready for a party especially involving friends, family, beer (pivo), and euchre. He lived life to the fullest with joy and optimism until the very end and into the beginning of the life hereafter, a seamless transition. Some of his last words were, "let's get this party started".
A lover of Harley Davidson motorcycles, Tim also enjoyed archery, firearms, welding, and restoring sand buggies and classic cars. When asked what he'd rather be doing as the final moments came, he said he'd like to be fly fishing, a testament to his calm demeanor, love of nature, and resolute reflection on life.
Tim proudly and voluntarily served his country as a Marine in the U.S. Armed Forces during the Vietnam conflict (1967–1968). He was wounded in action twice and honored with two Purple Hearts, enduring the mental and physical pain of war, but with courage and wisdom at each stage of healing. Upon returning home, he built a life and a home very near where he grew up centered on family, beginning with his beloved children: Tim, Jr., Todd, and Rachel and a broad hereditary and extended family with very deep roots in Monroe.
Tim worked briefly with the Monroe County Sheriff's Department and Chrysler Corporation before dedicating 30 years to Michigan Gas Utilities Company. Diagnosed with congestive heart failure at the age of 44 and retiring at 55, he embraced his family, friends, hobbies, and passions with even more zest for life, optimism, practicality, and pursuit for another 30 plus fulfilling years until the very end of his physical life.
He often shared that he never expected to return from Vietnam, commenting with great reflection that many of the guys he served with only experienced a high school prom, graduation, or an 18th birthday. He had so many more rich experiences in an extended life than he thought would ever be possible, he would often say. He was thankful to live so well into his 70s. He cherished his birthdays almost like a child. He passed into eternal life at 76 years of age. Tim's temporal life was a testament to resilience and gratitude.
Tim was born in Monroe on January 24, 1948, the son of Merlyn Edward, Sr. and Irene (nee Sebestova) Kuehnlein, both deceased. He was preceded in death by his parents and younger brother Merlyn Edward, Jr. He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Debra (nee Bowman) Kuehnlein, and eldest brother Thomas Edward, Sr., children, and extended family, especially his grandchildren who brought him immense joy.
A private reflection and celebration of life will be held by the immediate family. Memorials may be directed to an organization of choice, including veterans' organizations. Semper fi.
