Thomas R. Opperman, age 69 of Maybee, MI, passed away Tuesday morning, February 15, 2022 at ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital. He had been in declining health the past six weeks.
Born September 13, 1952 in Monroe, Tom was the son of the late Wilmer and Rose Mary (King) Opperman of Maybee. He graduated from Monroe High School in 1971 and served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War from Oct. 11, 1972 to Oct. 10, 1974. On Oct. 6, 1984, Tom married Lorraine T. Steckmeyer at St. Mary Catholic Church.
Tom was employed by La-Z-Boy as an electrician for approximately 30 years. He was a member of St. Mary Church and enjoyed gardening, fishing, reading, traveling and tinkering.
Tom is survived by his wife of 37 years, Lorie Opperman; sister, Martha Rais of Marietta, GA; sister-in-law, Pat (Lehr) Welch of Lambertville; brother-in-law, Richard (Pat) Steckmeyer of Monroe; nieces and nephews: Anthony Rais, Scott Opperman, Teresa (Doug) Black, Ryan (Sara) Steckmeyer, and Rob (Amanda) Steckmeyer; and several great nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Tom was also preceded in death by a brother, George; 6 month old brother, Jimmy; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Doras and Leona Steckmeyer; brother-in-law, Ben Rais; sister-in-law, Becky Steckmeyer; and nephew, Todd Opperman.
Family and friends may visit from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18th at Bacarella Funeral Home where a Scripture Service will be held at 7 p.m. Tom will lie in state Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. by Rev. Fr. Kishore Battu. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Maybee with military honors provided by Monroe VFW Post 1138.
