Obituary

Thelma A. Petit, age 86, of Monroe, MI passed away Monday, March 9, 2009 at 7:51 AM at Mercy Memorial Hospital in Monroe. Thelma was born November 21, 1922 in Clearfield, Iowa the daughter of the late William J. and Jennie Mae (Shafer) Grace. Thelma's family moved to Monroe in 1936 from Iowa. Thelma attended Monroe Public Schools and was a 1941 graduate of Monroe High School. Thelma also attended Monroe County Community College to acquired her real estate license. On October 31, 1942 in Ypsilanti, MI Thelma married her beloved husband Louis Petit. Sadly he preceded her in death on December 9, 2002 after 60 years of marriage. Thelma was a homemaker who enjoyed working outside the home. Thelma assisted her husband in running Louis Petit Trucking Company, she worked as a shell inspector for Monroe Auto Equipment Company During WWII and was a realtor for Barrington Realty in Monroe. Thelma was a member of Monroe St. Paul's United Methodist and the United Methodist Women. During the 1950's Thelma was a Co-Leader for the Blue Bird's at Riverside School. Thelma also loved animals especially her dog Sheba. Thelma is survived by her beloved children; Monte L. Petit of Monroe and Marilyn J. (Robert) Scheick of Toledo, OH, 5 cherished grandchildren; Mark Scheick, Jeffrey Scheick, Amy (Josh) Scheick – Gasaway, Denise Petit and Monte L. (Jessica) Petit Jr., and 7 treasured great grandchildren; Devin, Christian, Riley, Alexandria, Nicholas, Benjamin and Madison. In addition to her husband and parents Thelma was preceded in death by her daughter in law Pamella Petit and 6 brothers and sisters. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 1-9 PM in the Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 S. Telegraph Rd in Monroe. On Friday, March 13, 2009 she will lie in state at St. Paul's United Methodist Church from 10:00 AM until funeral services celebrating her life at 11:00 AM. The Rev. Evans C. Bentley and Fr. James Scheick will officiate. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to the Monroe County Humane Society.
