Obituary

On October 19 heaven gained another angel. Susan Jane Kull, age 97, of Monroe was born August 12, 1927, in Maybee, Michigan. She was the daughter of Walter J and Nina (Jones) Steinman. Susan Jane was a 1945 graduate of St. Mary Academy in Monroe and went on to graduate with her BA in 1949 from Marygrove College in Detroit, achieving her dream of becoming a teacher. Susan Jane also completed graduate studies at University of Michigan, Eastern Michigan University and Oakland University. Susan began her teaching career at Boyd School in Monroe then went to Jefferson Schools.
Susan Jane married Richard F. Kull on August 11, 1951. They were married for 70 years before Richard's passing on August 22, 2021. The lights of Susan's life have been their two daughters, Kathleen (Michael) DeSloover and Nancy (Steve) Hoffman.
As a stay -at -home mother and farmer's wife, Susan Jane tended to raising her girls and cooking delicious meals for her family and the hired farm help. When Jefferson Schools recruited Susan to return to teaching, she answered the call. After teaching for a total of 32 years, mostly at Hurd Road Elementary, Susan Jane retired in June 1991.
A devout Catholic, Susan was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Monroe. Her faith carried her through life's challenges. In her later years, she was known to pray the rosary three times daily with Sister Angelica on EWTN. Susan enjoyed watching the Detroit Tigers on TV, often loudly voicing her opinion about the actions taken in the game. She enjoyed shopping trips with her girls. She loved sending and receiving cards, the beauty of flowers, and baking apple crisp. A wise woman, Susan gave practical, sound advice to those who asked for guidance. Family was very important to her. She never forgot a birthday or anniversary.
Susan leaves behind to cherish her memory: her two girls and their husbands of Monroe, her grandchildren: David M. (Jessica) DeSloover, Daniel G. DeSloover, Emily (Steve) Thomas, Jessica (Woody) Hoffer, and Elizabeth Hoffman, her great-grandchildren: Nate and Aunica Hoffer, Julian and Sophia DeSloover and Isaac and Isabelle Thomas, and many special nieces and nephews.
Susan was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her brothers: Walter, Douglas, Gilbert, and Raymond Steinman.
