Stanley R. Opfermann, age 97 of Kalamazoo, MI, formerly of Monroe, passed away Sunday, May 12, 2024 at Rose Arbor Place.
Born November 23, 1926 in Monroe, Stanley was the son of the late George and Sabra (Olmsted) Opfermann. He graduated from Monroe High School in 1944 and attended Michigan State University and Eastern Michigan University where he obtained a bachelor degree and a master's degree in education.
Stanley twice served his country in the U.S. Armed Forces in the Army Air Corp. He served during World War II and the Korean War, earning the Good Conduct Medal and the WWII Victory Medal. He enlisted on February 12, 1944 and was honorably discharged from active duty on April 8, 1952, obtaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. He then served in the Michigan Air National Guard.
After returning to civilian life, Stanley married Joyce M. Bredernitz on August 28, 1954 in Monroe and together raised three children. During that period, he began a long working career as an educator with Taylor Public Schools, retiring in 1987 after 32 years.
Stanley was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Matt Urban American Legion Post 40, AMVETS of Monroe Post 1942, Yankee Air Museum, and Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed time spent with his family and socializing with his neighbors. After retiring, he served on the board of directors for Pump Engineering and eScapes in Monroe, and treasured traveling with his wife.
Stanley is survived by a son, Mark (Jenny) Opfermann of Norton Shores, MI; daughter, Amy (Dale) Anderson of Dundee, MI; brother, Gene (Mary Lou) Opfermann of Monroe; four grandchildren: Danielle (Jeremiah) Bersche, Andrew Anderson, Luke Opfermann, and Nathan Opfermann.
In addition to his parents, Stanley was preceded in death by his wife on October 9, 2020; infant daughter Ann; and son, David Opfermann.
Family and friends may visit from 11 a.m. until the time of funeral at 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 23rd at Bacarella Funeral Home. Wayne Butts of Christ Lutheran Church will officiate followed by burial at Roselawn Memorial Park where military honors will be provided by Monroe VFW Post 1138.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations are suggested to Amy Anderson to benefit Jefferson Schools College Scholarship Fund.
