Obituary

Shirley K. Soltman, age 87, passed away Monday, July 11, 2022, at Brookdale Clare Bridge of Monroe.
Born February 6, 1935, in Monroe, MI, Shirley was the daughter of the late Edward and Katherine (Schassberger) Soltman. In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by six siblings: Ruth McKenzie, Arthur Soltman, Donald Soltman, Arlene Stevens, Norman Soltman, and Edward Soltman.
The first of her immediate family to attend college, Shirley earned a bachelor's degree from Eastern Michigan University 1960 and completed her master's degree from there in 1967. She taught Speech and Language at Dearborn and West Bloomfield Public Schools, then continued in clinical practice as a Speech Pathologist in Pittsburgh, Wheeling, WV, and Kalamazoo, MI.
Some of Shirley's favorite pastimes included traveling, snorkeling, woodworking, playing card and board games, taking classes at Kalamazoo College, and sharing laughs and stories with her family. During her lifetime, she called many places home including Germany, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Brazil.
The youngest of her siblings with no children of her own, Shirley played an important and memorable role in the lives of her nieces and nephews: David McKenzie, Laura (McKenzie) Herr, Barbara McKenzie, Hilda McKenzie, Jean (Soltman) Hahlbeck, Susan (Soltman) Proctor, Dorothy (Soltman) Caron, Kathryn Stevens, Marjorie Stevens, Randal Stevens, Larry Stevens, and Jeffrey Soltman and Pamela Soltman. She is also survived by 14 grand nieces and nephews and 15 great-grand nieces and nephews.
Shirley was a member of Zion Lutheran Church Monroe and Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Portage, MI. She was a lifelong member of American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and its Michigan branch.
In accordance with Shirley's wishes, no services will be planned. Bacarella Funeral Home is assisting the family with cremation arrangements.
Memorial donations are suggested to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America, American Stroke Association, or Elara Hospice of Michigan.
