Obituary

Sarah E. Stephens, 89 years, of Monroe, MI went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 20, 2011 at Sinai-Grace Hospital in Detroit, MI
Born January 27, 1922 Meridian, MS, Sarah was the daughter of the late Kennist and Sadie (Burnette) Brooks. On April 3, 1965 in Toledo, OH Sarah married her beloved husband Benjamin F. Stephens. Sadly he preceded her in death on July 8, 1986 after 21 years of marriage.
Sarah moved to the Monroe area in the 1940's and worked as a domestic for several families in Monroe. Sarah was also a wonderful homemaker and an excellent cook and baker.
Sarah was a very active member of Second Missionary Baptist Church in Monroe. She was head of the Usher Board, a Willing Worker, on the Mother's Board and on the Pastor's Aid Board. Other memberships included the VFW Post 1138 Ladies Auxiliary and the Order of Eastern Star. She enjoyed bowling and traveling.
Sarah is survived by 2 daughters in law; Ella B. Fanning, whom she made her home with in Detroit, and Crist Jackson of Gary, IN, 7 cherished grandchildren and 19 treasured great grandchildren and 1 cherished great great grandchild.
In addition to her husband and parents, Sarah was preceded in death by 2 sons; Kennist and Howard and a sister Ruby.
Visitation and Family hour will be held on Saturday, March 26, 2011 at 11:00 AM in Second Missionary Baptist Church, 501 Clark St., Monroe, MI 48161 where funeral services celebrating her life will begin at 12:00 noon. The Rev. Allen Overton, pastor of the church, will officiate. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park. The Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 S. Telegraph Rd. in Monroe is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
