Obituary

Sam J. Cusumano Sr., age 77, a lifelong resident of Monroe, MI passed away Saturday, October 3, 2009 at the V.A. Hospital in Ann Arbor, MI. Sam had been in declining health for 1 month. Sam was born July 11, 1932 in Monroe, MI the son of the late Giuseppe and Maria (Badalamenti) Cusumano. Sam attended Monroe Catholic Central High School. After high school Sam served his country proudly in the US Army during the Korean War. On September 14, 1963 Sam married Betty R. Williamson at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Monroe. For 50 years Sam owned and operated the Custer Beer Company in Monroe. One of his greatest joys was working along side his two sons Joe and Sam whom he groomed to help run his business. Sam was a member of St. John The Baptist Catholic Church, VFW Post 1138, the Monroe Boat Club, the Toledo, Yacht Club and the Michigan Beer and Wine Wholesalers Association. Sam enjoyed boating, vacationing on Sanibel Island, FL, and attending his grandchildren's sporting events. Above all else Sam loved and enjoyed spending time with his family. Sam is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years; Betty, 2 loving sons; Joseph A. (Sheila) Cusumano of Newport and Sam J. Cusumano Jr. of Monroe, 2 cherished grandchildren Sam and Joe Cusumano. In addition to his parents Sam was preceded in death by his sister Margaret Bartolotta. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 1-8 PM in the Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 S. Telegraph Rd., in Monroe, where the Rosary will be prayed at 6 PM. On Thursday October 8, 2009 prayers will begin at the funeral home at 10:15 AM followed by Mass of the Resurrection celebrating Sam's life at 11:00 AM in St. John The Baptist Catholic Church. Fr. Jack Quinlan pastor of the church will officiate. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Monroe.
