Salvador J. “Sam” Cusumano, age 89 of Monroe, MI, passed away Monday, October 12, 2026 at Waltonwood Carriage Park, Canton, MI.

Born September 11, 1937 in Monroe, Sam was the son of the late Vito and Mary (Bellino) Cusumano. He attended Monroe Public Schools and graduated from Monroe High School.

Sam honorably served his country during the Vietnam War. He served in the U.S. Army from Nov. 30, 1962 until being discharged on November 29, 1965. The following year, he married Donna Jane Verhoeven on November 25, 1966 at St. Mary Catholic Church. Together they raised three children.

Sam co-owned and operated Broadway Market in Monroe for many years before retiring in 1998. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and former member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Bay Creek Hunting Club, and the Monroe Club.

Sam is survived by his children, Vito Cusumano of Monroe, Kris (Chip) Neubar of Canton, MI, and Sam (Melissa) Cusumano of Madison, WI; three sisters, Catherine (Charles) Wolfe, Frances (James) Myers, and Margaret McBride; and four grandchildren: Olivia Cusumano, Sarah Neubar, Anna Cusumano, and Gianna Cusumano.

In addition to his parents, Sam was preceded in death by his wife on November 7, 2023.

A memorial visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 2nd at Bacarella Funeral Home. Military honors will be provided at 6 p.m. by members of the Monroe VFW Post 1138 Ritual Team followed by a Scripture Service. A memorial Mass of the Resurrection will be held at St. Mary Catholic Church on Tuesday, Nov. 3rd at 11 a.m. Rev. Fr. David Burgard will officiate. Private interment will take place at St. Joseph Cemetery.
