Obituary

Ruby S. Palmer, age 89 of Monroe, formerly of Seaford, Delaware, passed away Friday, November 24, 2023 at ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital with her loved ones at her side.
Born April 13, 1934 in Eufaula, Alabama, Ruby was the daughter of the late Shep and Inell (Vickers) Irby. On August 28, 1955, she married John C. Palmer in Monroe. He preceded her in passing on December 1, 2013.
Ruby was employed for over 42 years by the Seaford School District in Delaware. As a paraprofessional, she wore many hats and served in many capacities, always keeping the best interests of the children in mind. She returned to Monroe approximately four years ago to be near family.
Ruby was an active member of the John Wesley Methodist Church in Seaford and attended Second Missionary Baptist Church in Monroe. She was also a member of the Frenchtown Senior Center. Ruby was passionate about being of service to others and giving back to the community. She attended city council meetings in Seaford and volunteered as a bus driver for many years, delivering food to families where needed.
Ruby was an overall sports enthusiast and mostly enjoyed watching basketball. She herself was naturally athletic and played city league sports. She was often sought after when players were needed for basketball, softball or volleyball, even into her mid-forties. Ruby also enjoyed going for motorcycle rides with her son-in-law.
Ruby is survived by three children, Carolyn (Patrick) McAllister of Monroe, John (Linda) Palmer of Toledo, and Thakery (Kia Burke) Palmer of Seaford, DE; 8 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, Ruby was preceded in death by a son, Clinton Palmer of Seaford; brother, Roger Irby; sisters, Daisy Irby and Allie Irby Bacon; nephews, Patrick and Myron Irby; and niece, Joy Bacon, all of New York.
Family and friends may visit from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29th at Bacarella Funeral Home. Services will begin at 3 p.m. with Rev. Terrance Johnson, Pastor of Second Missionary Baptist Church officiating. Additional services will follow at her church in Seaford including burial at Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Milford, DE.
