Roy L. Thompson, 51 years of Monroe, MI. passed away Thursday, December 28, 2006 at 1:54 AM in his home surrounded by his loving family. Roy had been in poor health for 5 months and seriously ill for 6 weeks. Roy was born September 7, 1955 in Barstow, California, the son of James A. and Annabelle (Wyreman) Thompson. Roy moved to Monroe in 1972 from Tennessee. Roy attended Powell Valley High School in Speedwell, TN and Monroe County Community College. On September 21, 2001 Roy married Esther M. Stevens at Trinity Lutheran Church in Monroe. Roy worked as a welder and an assembler at Detroit Stoker Company in Monroe for 31 years retiring in January of 2005. Roy also retired as the Financial Secretary for local 2511 United Steel Workers in Monroe where he held that and numerous other positions for 20 years. Roy was a delegate to the Monroe/Lenawee County AFL-CIO Central Labor Council. Roy was the Financial Secretary for the Monroe County Council CIO Social and Welfare Association. Roy was instrumental in the effort to save the Phillip Murray Building and converting it into the Monroe Labor Museum. Roy attended Trinity Lutheran Church and enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing and many outdoor activities. Roy is survived by his beloved wife Esther, his beloved mother Annabelle McMillin of Monroe, 3 loving children; Douglas (Jennifer) Thompson of Monroe, MI, Phillip Thompson of Monroe, MI. and Misty (Lowery) Allen of Sparta, TN, 2 loving step children; Shiloh Stevens of Erie, MI. and Ashley (Michael) Guyor of Monroe, MI. 3 brothers; Wayne (Donna) Thompson of Monroe, MI., Curt (Alice) Thompson of Trenton, MI. and James (Jeannine) Thompson of Louisville, KY. 3 sisters; Roseann Stewart of Springfield, OH, Mary (Jesse) St. John of Springfield, OH and Amber Massingo of Milan, MI. and 10 cherished grandchildren. Sadly, Roy was preceded in death by his Father and his brother Richard F. Thompson. Visitation for Roy will be held Friday from 12-9 PM in the Bacarella Funeral Home. On Saturday, December 30, 2006 he will lie in state at Trinity Lutheran Church from 10:00 AM until funeral services celebrating his life at 11:00 AM. The Rev. S.R. AuBuchon Pastor of Trinity Lutheran church will officiate. Entombment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park. The family has requested memorial contributions be made to Trinity Lutheran Church.
