Roger E. Bohmer, 98 years, a lifelong resident of Monroe, Michigan went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 14, 2025 at ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital in Monroe, Michigan.
Born September 25, 1926 in Monroe, Roger was the son of the late Joseph and Maude (Boughton) Bohmer. Roger was a 1944 graduate of Monroe High School. He also attended Boston university and Henry Ford College.
After graduation Roger enlisted in the United States Navy. He served August 27, 1944 until his final discharge on December 30, 1952, making him a veteran of both WWII and the Korean War. Most of his time was spent at the Sampson Naval Base in Boston, MA in naval intelligence and supply.
On October 17, 1946 Roger married his beloved wife, the former Lucille Mary Burkett, at First United Methodist Church. Sadly, she preceded him in death on April 7, 2016 after 69 years of marriage.
Roger began his career in accounting as a payroll supervisor at Consolidated Paper Company for 15 years, he then went to work at Ford Motor Company where he worked as an accountant and payroll coordinator until his retirement on May 1, 1989.
Roger was a life member of First United Methodist Church (now Faith United Methodist Church) in Monroe, where he held several positions in the church and taught Sunday School for 30 years. He was also a life member of the Monroe County Fair Association, Lincoln and Monroe High School Alumni Association, Nation Amvets, Sampson WWII Naval Base Veterans, Michigan State director of Sampson Veterans, Ford Motor Company salaried retiree's, Monroe and Dundee Senior Centers, American Legion Post 514 in Ida, MI, National Association of Public Notaries, and the Monroe County Historical Society. Roger was a Big Brother with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America and was awarded Big Brother of the Year. He also was a Boy Scout Leader for Troop #6. Roger enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening and was a big fan of The Detroit Tigers. Most of all Roger enjoyed time spent with family.
Roger is survived by his loving son, Ronald E. Bohmer of St. Helen, MI, five cherished grandchildren: Jeff (Jennifer Knicely) Bohmer, Jason (Amanda) Bohmer, James (Joann) Kohler, Joel (Alexis)Weatherholt, and Julie (Kevin) Kerfoot, 12 treasured great grandchildren, 2 adored great great grandchildren, a daughter – in – law, Irene Bohmer of Monroe and his Little Brother of 55 years, Kent (Ann) MacIver.
In addition to his beloved wife and parents, Roger was preceded in death by his son Melvin (Choo Choo) Bohmer, two brothers: Lewis and Howard, two sisters: Bernice Pierce and Deleores Carmon and a daughter-in-law, Marcy.
Visitation will be held on Sunday from 1-7 pm at Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 S. Telegraph Rd., Monroe, Michigan, 48161, where on Monday, January 20, 2025 funeral services celebrating Roger's life will be held at 11:00 am. The VFW post 1138 will conduct military honors and the Rev. Donald Beasley, pastor of Faith United Methodist Church, will officiate. Interment will follow at Historic Woodland Cemetery in Monroe.
