He was a 1976 graduate of Whiteford Agricultural High School, where he lettered in wrestling and football. He went on to attend Monroe County Community College where he received his EMT certification.

On August 2, 1980, Bob married the love of his life, the former Jeannie E. Massingill, at Erie United Methodist Church.
