Robert L. Gray, 90, of Monroe, passed away on Thursday, April 16, 2015 at Fountain View, Monroe, where he had been for about 2 years.
He was born August 5, 1924 in Claiborne County, TN to George W. and Cynthia (Bundon) Gray. He came to Monroe when he was a child.
He attended Monroe Public Schools, and then served in the US Army during WW II. He then went to work at Consolidated Paper Company, where he spent 35 years until they closed. After that he finished his career as a custodian for Monroe Public Schools for 10 years, until retiring in 1989.
Robert was a member of the Monroe Bible Fellowship Church, where he served as an usher, a board member, and sang in the choir, he was a life member of the VFW Post #1138, Monroe, former member of the Eagle's Nest and the Elk Lodge, Monroe, and he will be remembered for enjoying walks, singing, and meeting with his friends at Meijer.
He leaves to cherish his memory many nieces and nephews, who he loved very much, including; Wanda L. Morgan, Cynthia E. Vaslo, and Robert R. Prewitt; great niece and nephew, John Ferguson and Amy (Justin) Boyd; and great great nieces, Jennifer Morgan and Bella Boyd, all of Monroe.
Sadly, he was preceded in death by his parents, 6 brothers, Porter, Jim, Charlie, Harvey, Henry, and Albert, and 2 sisters, Cleo Cole and Annabelle Prewitt.
Friends are invited to call at the Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 S. Telegraph Road, on Monday, April 20, from 1-8 PM. He will lie in state on Tuesday at the Bible Fellowship Church from 10 AM until services to commemorate his life at 11 AM. Rev. J.D. Walker, pastor of the church, will officiate. Burial will follow at Historic Woodland Cemetery under the Auspices of the VFW, Post #1138.
