Obituary

Peter R. Nelson, age 76 of Monroe, passed away Tuesday afternoon, October 12, 2021 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Ann Arbor.
Born October 3, 1945 in Iron Mountain, MI, Peter was the son of the late Robert and Lois (Johnson) Nelson. He graduated from Dundee High School in 1964 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy on Feb. 4, 1966. Peter served his country during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged on Jan. 15, 1970, earning the National Defense Service Medal.
On July 30, 1966, Peter married Linda S. Bird in Dundee, MI. Together, they raised two children, Lisa and Eric.
Peter had a long career with Ford Motor Company, working at the Rawsonville Plant for 36 years before retiring in 2001. He enjoyed the outdoors and the freedom of riding his Harley. He also enjoyed collecting model cars, ballroom and country western dancing with his wife Linda, and the challenge of assembling large jig-saw puzzles.
Peter was a member of Redeemer Fellowship Church, the National Rifle Association, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 0142, American Legion Post 225, and a former member of the Christian Motorcyclist Association. At his church, Peter operated their food closet program for several years and was also involved in the food distribution program at MCOP.
Surviving Peter are his wife of 55 years, Linda Nelson; his two children, Lisa (Tony) Moisan of Ypsilanti, MI and Eric Nelson of Willis, MI; a sister, Sally (Dick) Juba of Shakopee, MN; and grandson, Peter Moisan of Kentwood, MI.
Private graveside services were held at Rath Cemetery. Monroe VFW Post 1138 performed military honors in conjunction with Pastor John Piippo who provided rights of committal and words of comfort. All are invited to attend a memorial celebration of Peter's life at Redeemer Fellowship Church on Saturday, Oct. 30th at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, Peter's family encourages potential donors to support Disabled American Veterans for the continued assistance of those who sacrificed in service to our country.
