Patricia Ruth Cook, of Carleton, MI, entered eternal rest on January 29, 2025, peacefully reuniting with her soulmate Edward. Her 92 wonderful years were a masterpiece of unconditional love, compassion and devotion. Always positive and cheerful, she exemplified a loving wife and devoted mother. She was fiercely devoted to her family and faith, instilling in her children and grandchildren the virtues of hard work, wisdom and love.
Born on 22 September 1932, Pat was raised on a farm in the small rural Missouri town of Maryville. A 1950 graduate of Horace Mann School for Early Childhood Education, she enjoyed music and drama competitions, sang alto in quartets, and was voted class president. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Northwest Missouri State University and a Master of Arts degree in early elementary education from Eastern Michigan University in 1979. She was certified as an Early Childhood Specialist. Pat met her husband, Ed, while attending University. She and Ed married, June 27, 1955. Her unconditional love for Ed grew ever stronger throughout their 68 years together. They chose to settle in Carleton, MI, where they turned 20 acres and a pond into an idyllic wonderland for their kids and grandkids.
A longtime teacher, Pat began her career in a one-room country school in West Point, Iowa. That early experience solidified her lifelong commitment to fostering a love of learning. She was a teacher at heart, always eager to inspire curiosity in her children and grandchildren. From 1953-56, she taught kindergarten in Maryville and Riverview Community Schools. She continued teaching until it was time to embrace her most cherished role—motherhood. Pat absolutely loved the golden age of childhood and believed motherhood to be "the best example of delayed gratification." After 15 years of raising her seven children, Pat successfully returned to the workforce. While balancing family life and studies, she earned a master's degree in education and embarked on a new 30-year teaching career. She taught preschool and served as Center Supervisor for Carleton Head Start. Pat eventually retired and transitioned to substitute teaching in the Airport, Monroe and Jefferson School districts.
Pat was an active volunteer with the 4H club (Carleton Go-getters) and St Patrick's ladies extension club and parish. She was a talented seamstress and gardener. She loved nature and flowers of all kinds, but especially Daisies and Sunflowers. Her favorite activity was anything involving grandkids, bike rides and Calder Dairy. She was a fierce prayer warrior and devout Catholic.
Pat's love of music and reading was another beautiful gift she shared with the world. With a song for every state in the nation, and a book for every occasion, she filled our minds with knowledge and our hearts with melody and joy. She had a truly beautiful voice. Whether singing in the church choir, playing piano, or encouraging her children to pick up an instrument, her passion for music left an enduring legacy.
As a testament to her role as the central hub of our sprawling family, she was affectionately known as the "PNN – the Pat News Network." It was a family joke, stemming from her deep love and desire to keep us all connected.
No tribute to Pat is complete without mention of her favorite verse, which is also the way she lived her life... "Love is Patient, Love is Kind...Love Never Fails." While her passing leaves a void in the hearts of family and friends, her brilliant after-glow will forever light our way ahead. She would always remind us to keep a song in our hearts, so let's close with a song from one of her favorite books.... We love our house, we love our nest, in all the world our nest is best!
She is survived by her 6 children: Cathy (Michael) Garner, Barb (Brian) Stein, Joe (Becky), Chris (Patricia), Tony (Helena), and Terri (Bart) Fisher; and 32 grand and great-grandchildren. She was joyously welcomed into in the Kingdom of Heaven by those who preceded her in death: husband Edward, daughter Mary Sue, son Timothy Robert, grandson Gregory, great granddaughter Amelia, and siblings Betty, Mary, Nancy, John and Robert. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations to St Patrick School or St Mary Catholic Central High School.
