Martha A. Jones, age 87 of Monroe, passed away Tuesday, March 24, 2026 at Alice Lorraine Care Center.
Born September 13, 1938 in Distant, PA, Martha was the daughter of the late Herman and Kathryn (Shoemaker) Colwell. She moved to Monroe in 1951 and graduated from Monroe High School in 1956 where she met and married her high school sweetheart, Johnnie Jones on June 22, 1957 at Monroe Missionary Baptist Church. Together they raised two children.
Martha was employed in the banking industry for 37 years. She served as a secretary for several bank officers during her career at First National Bank, Security Bank, and First of America, retiring in 1996.
Martha was an avid sports enthusiast. She followed University of Michigan Football, Detroit Lions Football, and was a huge fan of Detroit Tigers Baseball. She attended opening-day games for 20+ years. She also enjoyed league bowling in Monroe for many years. Martha was a life member of the Monroe County Rod and Gun Club, its Ladies Auxiliary, and previously served as Treasurer.
Martha is survived by her husband of 68 years, Johnnie Jones; 2 daughters, Connie (Thomas) Guthrie of Monroe and Gayle (Bill) Lambert of LaSalle; brother, Herman Jack Colwell of Muskegon, MI; 4 grandchildren: Kari (Travis) Lusky, Zachary (Jessica) Guthrie, Erica (Matthew) Cosby, and Sarah (Ravin) Massingill; and 8 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Martha was preceded in death by a sister, Judy (Thomas) Beamish, and sister-in-law, Tonda Colwell.
Family and friends may visit from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Mar. 31st at Bacarella Funeral Home where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Apr. 1st. Rev. Rick Massingill, pastor of North Monroe Street Church of God will officiate followed by burial at Roselawn Memorial Park.
It is Martha's wish that memorial donations go to support St. Jude Children's Hospital.
