Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Mario S. Pace announces his passing on June 27, 2024. He was at peace, surrounded by his family.  He had been ill for eight months and in hospice (at home) since January 2024.

Mario was born on November 27, 1930, in Poggioreale, Sicily, Italy, to Stefano and Rosalia (Todaro) Pace. He immigrated to the United States at seven years old in 1938 and lived with his parents in Monroe,. He graduated from Monroe High School in 1949. Mario married Catherine A. Jennings on February 29, 1956, and together they raised three sons in Monroe.

Mario worked many jobs in his early career, including his service in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He went on to work for the Monroe County Juvenile and Probate Court, starting as a Juvenile Probation Officer, then serving as the Court's Director until his retirement in 1994. In addition, he owned and operated Louie's Pizzeria in Rockwood, Michigan, in the late 1960s through the early 1970s.  Moreover, he coordinated foreign language learning for the Monroe Adult Education Program for many enjoyable years - all while working full time at the Court.

He and Catherine had the privilege to help care for several of their six grandchildren over their 63 years of marriage. Mario's favorite way to spend time was with family, usually around the dinner table or at the family cabin in Luther, Michigan. Being close to many lakes and rivers, it quickly became a very popular family destination. He loved to cook and play sports, including Golden Gloves boxing and varsity tennis in high school. He was an avid gardener and deer hunter, enjoying many seasons with family and friends.

Mario was a unique man who was a friend to all, especially those in need. He truly had a desire to see those around him flourish and encouraged their success. Regardless of whether it was work or play, he showed his dedication in many fundraising activities and charity dinners over the decades, and to improving the quality of life for the Italian-American community. His quick wit and sense of humor are already missed.

Mario, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, is survived by his sons, Stephen J. Pace, John T. Pace, and Michael S. Pace, and former daughter-in-law, Amy Pace; his grandchildren, whom he adored, Stephen J. Pace II (Melissa), Michael A. Pace (Meghan), Maegan E. Pace, Rachel K. Girardot Pace (John), and Rebecca C. Pace, and his great-grandson, Charles F. Pace; as well as his beloved sister, Josephine N. Gaglio.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, his parents, and his granddaughter, Vanessa J. Pace.
