Marie H. McElya, 78 years, of Ballston Spa, NY, formerly of Monroe, MI, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, February 4, 2013 at 2:59 AM at Maplewood Manor in Ballston Spa.
Born November 30, 1934 in Monroe, MI, Marie was the daughter of the late George W. and Lydia M. (Wittkop) Burt. Marie attended school in Monroe and was a 1952 graduate of Monroe High School. While living in Monroe Marie was a member of Holy Ghost Lutheran Church.
Marie served her country honorably and proudly in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956.
Marie was employed at Casper's Party Store and as a cook at Memorial Hospital while living in Monroe. While living in Paducah, Kentucky she was employed as a cook for the Western Baptist Hospital.
Marie will always be remembered as having a positive outlook on life and as a loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend to all that knew her.
Marie is survived by her loving son and daughter in law: Leslie D. and Susan McElya of Clifton Park, NY, two cherished grandchildren: Elizabeth (John) Landon and Michele McElya, two brothers: Alfred Burt and Howard (Ruth) Burt both of Monroe, and three sisters: Margaret Swinkey of Monroe, Bonnie (Dale) Kregel of Monroe and Evelyn Richardson of Oley Montana. In addition to her parents Marie was preceded in death by her son Terry McElya and two brothers: Arthur and George Burt and two sisters: Bernice Giamanco and Thelma Siterlet.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 17, 2013 from 1-7 PM in the Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 S. Telegraph Rd., in Monroe, MI. On Monday, February 18, 2013 she will lie in state at the Lutheran Home Chapel in Monroe from 10:00 AM until funeral services celebrating her life at 11:00 AM. The Rev. Larry K. Loree, Jr., pastor of Holy Ghost Lutheran Church will officiate. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park.
