Madeline A. Smith, age 92, a lifelong resident of Monroe, MI passed away Monday, December 1, 2008 at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center in Toledo, OH. Madeline was born April 3, 1916 in Monroe, MI the daughter of the late Frank and Bessie A. (Dunbar) Gillespie. Madeline attended Monroe Public Schools and was a 1935 graduate of Monroe High School. On October 14, 1961 at St. Paul's United Methodist Church Madeline married Elmer D. Smith. Sadly he preceded her in death on November 19, 1980. Madeline worked as a receptionist and bookkeeper for Dr.'s McMillan and Frary, ear nose and throat specialists in Monroe for 25 years. Madeline retired when the office closed. Madeline enjoyed bowling, playing euchre, traveling and working in her yard. Madeline is survived by her stepdaughter; Mary E. Cromer of Monroe, her brother Melvin D. Gillespie of Monroe, her sister Ruth Herr of Inverness, FL and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Madeline was preceded in death by a brother Dwight Gillespie and 2 sisters; Veva McPhail and Joan Davis. Visitation will be held on Friday from 1-8 PM in the Bacarella Funeral Home where funeral services celebrating her life will be held on Saturday, December 6, 2008 at 10:00 AM. The Rev. Evans Bentley pastor of St. Paul's United Methodist Church will officiate. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to The Special Olympics or to a charity of the donor's choice.
