Lucy (Belle) C. Burgess, age 94, died at 12:30 p.m., Friday, February 1, 2008, at the Luthern Home of Monroe where she had been a resident since 1998. Lucy was born September 22, 1913 in Claiborne County, Tennessee. Daughter of Thomas Cassada and Kate Alice Evans, she graduated from Monroe High School in 1933, received a degree in nursing at Grace Hospital of Nursing in Detroit and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Army Nurses Corps. After being honorably discharged from the Army in 1946 she was employed by Kelsey-Hayes and then Ford Motor Company as an industrial nurse until her retirement in 1978. Following retirement from Ford Motor she worked as a nurse at the Lutheran Home and volunteered for Red Cross blood drives. Lucy enjoyed knitting, cooking, baking, traveling, bowling and swimming. She was an avid Detroit Tigers fan. Surviving are a brother-in-law, Howard Diehl; nephews Doug (Joyce) Cassada of Ottawa Lake; Thomas (Connie) Diehl of Monroe, John (Deborah) Diehl of Newport; nieces Judith (Cecil) Smith of Salt Lake City, Utah; Katherine Diehl of Barre, Massachusetts; Mary Younglove of Monroe and Shirley (Larry) Clock of LaSalle. Preceeded in death by brothers Carson, Horace, and (infant) John; sisters Ethel Diehl, Freda Hale, and (infants) Arrie and Dorothy. A private memorial service is planned. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lutheran Home of Monroe and Mercy Memorial Hospice of Monroe.
