Leonard R. Liedel, 81 years, of Monroe, Michigan went home to be with the Lord on Monday, January 2, 2017 at Henry Ford Wyandotte General Hospital.
Born July 9, 1935 in Maybee, Michigan, Lenny was the son of the late Leonard S. and Amilda (Specht) Liedel. Lenny attended St. Joseph School in Maybee and was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph Parish, also in Maybee. Lenny was a 1953 graduate of Monroe Catholic Central High School, where he excelled at sports, especially football, where he was known as "The Maybee Flash". He received a football scholarship to the University of Toledo, where he received his degree.
On July 14, 1956 Lenny married his beloved wife, the former Mary Ellen Knowles, at St. Michael The Archangel Catholic Church in Monroe.
Lenny was employed as a clerk for Ford Motor Company in Monroe from which he retired after 25 years. After retirement Lenny and Mary moved to The Villages in Florida.
Lenny was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Monroe where he was a Eucharistic Minister. Other memberships include the Knights of Columbus and the Moose Lodge. He was active in Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Monroe before retirement. To say Lenny was a sports enthusiast was an understatement, he enjoyed playing volleyball, bike riding, playing euchre, and golf, he also enjoyed watching sports and at one time coached St. Michael's in CYO Football. Lenny is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Mary Ellen, two loving daughters: Kim M. (Kelley) Duffey of Monroe, and Julie A. (Jim) Tomaro of Bloomfield Hills, MI, four cherished grandchildren: Chase R. Duffey, Bruce Amwake, Malory Tomaro, and Ryan Tomaro, and five siblings: Kenneth "Gus" (Donna) Liedel of CO, Phyllis (Ray) Bobich of Maybee, Barbara (Joseph) Marino of Monroe, Marjorie "Ditty" Kehres of Monroe, and Larry (Pat LaRose) Liedel of Venice, FL.
In addition to his parents Lenny was preceded in death by six siblings: Elizabeth, Don, Jane, Shirley, Ruth and Art.
A memorial visitation will be held on Saturday, January 7, 2017 in the Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 S. Telegraph Rd., Monroe, MI, 48161, from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM at which time a memorial service celebrating his life will be begin.
