Leola Shankleton

Leola A. Shankleton, 83 years, a lifelong resident of the Monroe area, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 20, 2011 at 10:09 AM in Medilodge of Monroe. Born August 10, 1928 in Newport, MI, Leola was the daughter of the late Albert and Margaret (Flint) Spalding. Leola attended Monroe Public Schools. On September 12, 1946 Leola married her beloved husband Everett Shankleton in Fremont, OH. Sadly he preceded her in death on September 22, 1993. Leola spent many years caring for people as a nurse’s aid. She worked at the Monroe Hospital from 1947 to 1950 and Memorial Hospital on Stewart Road from 1957 from which she retired in 1969. She also worked for 17 years as a home health care nurse. Leola was a member of Stewart Road Christian Ministries Center where she sang with the Prime Time Singers and was a member of the churches Golden Agers. Leola was also a member of the A.A.R.P., the Monroe Senior Center and the VFW Post 1138 Ladies Auxiliary in Monroe. Leola enjoyed baking pies, especially apple pies, and being outdoors where occasionally she went fishing. More than anything Leola loved caring for and being with her family. Leola is survived by 4 loving children; Larry A. (Brenda) Shankleton of Monroe, Dennis E. (Patty) Shankleton of Scofield, MI, Randy J. (Mary) Shankleton of Maybee, MI and Nancy (Gary) Knox of Monroe, 11 cherished grandchildren, 17 treasured great grandchildren and 1 adored great great grandchild. 2 brothers; Lyle (Sue) Spalding of Rapid River, MI and Larry (Iris) Spalding of Monroe, 3 sisters; Glenna Stahelin of Hart, MI, Marlene Harris of Rio Linda, CA and Sally Spalding of Monroe. In addition to her husband Everett and her parents, Leola was preceded in death by 4 sisters and 2 brothers. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 3-8 PM in the Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 S. Telegraph Rd., in Monroe where funeral services celebrating her life will be held on Wednesday, November 23, 2011 at 10:00 AM. The Rev. Sean O’Neal will officiate. Interment will follow at Pleasantview Cemetery in Petersburg, MI. Memorial contributions are suggested to Stewart Road Christian Ministries Center.
