Katherine W. Walters, 82 years, of Monroe, Michigan went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, February 17, 2015 in her home.
Born August 4, 1932 in Pennington Gap, Virginia, Katherine was the daughter of the late Curtis Clarence and Florence Mary (Sumpter) Brooks. Katherine was a 1950 graduate of Pennington High School. She went on to further her education at Radford State Teachers College and received her B.S. Degree from Eastern Michigan University.
On January 17, 1954, Katherine married her beloved husband Bobby Ray Walters in Pennington Gap. The couple moved to Monroe in the fall of 1954. Sadly, Bobby Ray preceded her in death on February 26, 1991 after 37 years of marriage.
An educator, Katherine taught for two years at Keokee High School in Virginia, four years at Airport High School in Carleton and 25 ½ years at Custer Elementary School in the Monroe Public School System from, which she retired in 1986.
Katherine was a member of the Michigan Education Association, the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel, River Raisin Chapter of Eastern Star #208 and Frenchtown Senior Citizens. She was a very active member of Redeemer Fellowship Church in Monroe and the widow's organization. Most of all she enjoyed time spent with family.
Katherine is survived by three loving children: Michael A. (Jackie) Walters of Monroe, Marty L. Walters of Miamisburg, OH and Margaret R. Hafner of Waynesville, MO, seven cherished grandchildren: Niklas, Christa, Shelby, Brandon, Christopher, Brooke, and Sarah, three treasured great grandchildren: Caleb, Liam, and Kendall, two sisters: Virginia Musick of Tallahassee, FL and Jane (Lawrence) Phipps of Richmond, VA, and a sister in law: Bess Brooks of Culpepper, VA.
In addition to her husband and parents, Katherine was preceded in death by three brothers: Hubert, John Ed, and Curtis "JC" Brooks and a sister: Bonnie Soncrant.
Visitation will be held on Friday from 3-8 PM at the Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 S. Telegraph Rd., Monroe, Michigan 48161, where funeral services celebrating her life will be held on Saturday, February 21, 2015 at 1:00 PM. The Rev. John Piippo and the Rev. Joseph Atkinson will officiate. She will be interred next to her husband at Roselawn Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Redeemer Fellowship Church.
