Born April 26, 1920 in Monroe, June was the daughter of the late Matthew and Elizabeth (Grodi) Gillenkirk. June attended Monroe High School.
On May 11, 1940 June married her beloved husband Varnum R. Johnson at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Monroe. Sadly, he preceded her in death on January 26, 1970 after 29 years of marriage.
June worked as a nurse's aid at Monroe Convalescent Center for one year, she then went to work for Mercy Memorial Hospital where she worked for ten years. June retired in 1982. June also worked for Monroe Public Schools as a teacher's aid at Custer Elementary.
June was a long time member of St. Michael The Archangel Catholic Church. She enjoyed gardening, rock n roll music, especially Elvis Presley and the Beach Boys, playing the lotto and cards, animals, and going to the Fisher Theater in Detroit to watch plays. June will be remembered as a woman with a dry sense of humor who loved a good argument, that she never lost.  Most of all June enjoyed being with and spending time with her family.
June is survived by two loving children: Jennifer (Ron) Seals and Richard D. (Jean) Johnson, both of Monroe, four cherished grandchildren: Michele (Dan) Breiding, Scott Johnson, Rhonda Seals, and Amanda (Derrick) Daniel, five treasured great grandchildren: Nick, Kyle, Sydney, Casey and Lillian.
In addition to her parents and husband, June was preceded in death by her son Gary, two brothers: Bernard and Kenneth Gillenkirk, and a sister Lillian Marchese.
Visitation will be held on Thursday from 3-8 PM in the Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 S. Telegraph Rd., where a scripture service will be held at 6:00 PM. On Friday, May 31, 2013, she will lie in state at St. Michael The Archangel Catholic Church from 9:00 AM until Mass of the Resurrection celebrating her life at 10:00 AM. Fr. Stephen Vileo, pastor of the church, will officiate. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Monroe.
