Obituary

Judith M. "Judi" Schafer, 71 years of Carleton, Michigan, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 22, 2023 at Aspen Grove Assisted Living in Lambertville, Michigan. She was comforted by her husband and her three children.
Born August 28, 1951, in Monroe, Michigan, Judi was the daughter of the late George and Helen (Gilday) Cuthbert. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Anne Catholic Church and attended St. Anne Elementary School. She graduated from St. Mary Academy Monroe in 1969 and would go on to earn her degree as a Registered Nurse from Sienna Heights University.
On August 24, 1973, Judi married Larry S. Schafer, at St. Anne Catholic Church.
Judi worked as an Operating Room Nurse at Mercy Memorial Hospital for 46 years before retiring in September of 2016.
Judi was a member of Divine Grace Parish, Church of St. Patrick in Carleton. She preferred driving a golf cart on the golf course to a lawn mower around the lawn at home and could often be found at one of the local courses. Over her 35-year golfing career, she managed four Hole-in-One's (to her husband's zero over his 40-year golfing career). She was excited to introduce the game of golf to her grandchildren and taught them very well. Her second granddaughter Sydney marked her first ace at the age of 14. Judi loved to frequently pick-up the kids from school which often resulted in subsequent stops to the ice cream shop and a spoiled dinner or two. She was an avid tennis player and taught herself how to quilt once she was done shuttling her kids from one sporting event to the next. She was well known for baking and sharing her delicious Chocolate Rice Crispy Treats and Turtle Candies. Most of all Judi loved being with her family and laughing her infectious laugh at their antics.
Judi is survived by her beloved husband of 49 years, Larry, three loving children: Gregory R. (Claire) Schafer of Monroe, Beth S. (Kevin) Coyne of McLean, VA and Robert G. (Reta) Schafer of Brighton, eight cherished grandchildren: Callais, Bennett, Mairin, Emmett, Ellen, Patrick, Sydney, and Blake, and ten siblings: John (Cheryl) Cuthbert, Ronald Cuthbert, Judi's twin sister, Janice (Jack) Bamford, Barbara (Frank) Giarmo, Lee (Sylvia) Cuthbert, Gary (Sharon) Cuthbert, Paul (Margaret) Cuthbert, Laura (Ron) Blohm, Mark Cuthbert, and Mary (Andrew) Wilson.
Memorial visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 28 from 3 – 7 pm at Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 S. Telegraph Rd., Monroe, Michigan, 48161, where a Rosary Service will be held at 4:00 pm. On Wednesday, March 29, 2023 Judi's cremated remains will lie in state at Divine Grace Parish, Church of St. Patrick beginning at 10:00 am followed by Mass of the Resurrection celebrating her life at 11:00 am. Fr. Mike Woroniewicz will celebrate Mass. Interment will follow at St. Patrick Cemetery in Carleton.
Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Patrick School.
