Joyce Mayes, age 77 of Monroe, passed away Saturday, November 13, 2021 at Beaumont Hospital in Trenton. She had been in declining health for six months.
Born June 24, 1944 in Monroe, Joyce was the daughter of the late Henry and Glessie (Burke) Wilson. She married Donald E. Mayes, Sr. on July 2, 1971 in Point Place, Ohio. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary by renewing their wedding vows.
Joyce was a member of Bible Fellowship Church. God and family were her main passions. She was known to be very sociable and enjoyed being a homemaker and being a caregiver to many. After raising her children, Joyce worked for Sodexo Food Service at the Monroe Middle School and then in housekeeping at Mercy Memorial Hospital.
Joyce is survived by her husband Don; three children: Donald (Tracie) Mayes, Jr., Teresa (Danny) Hawkins, Brian (Candy) Mayes, and daughter-in-law, Patti Mayes, all of Monroe; a sister, Dorothy (Jim) Wylie of Deerfield; sisters-in-law, Peggy Wilson of LaSalle and Heidi Wilson of North Carolina; 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Joyce is also preceded in death by a daughter, Dawn Michelle Chavis and her husband Joseph; son, James Mayes; grandson, Ethan Hawkins; and brothers, Paul and David Wilson.
Family and friends may visit from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16th at Bacarella Funeral Home. Joyce will lie in state at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Bible Fellowship Church where services will be held at 11 a.m. The church pastor, Rev. Andy Hill will officiate along with Rev. B.J. McDaniel. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park.
