Joy D. Mathus, age 85 of Monroe, passed away Saturday, March 9, 2024 at ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital. She had been in declining health for two years.
Born February 18, 1939 in Monroe, Joy was the daughter of the late James and Juanita (Jenkins) Estep. She attended Monroe High School and married Robert L. Mathus on March 6, 1958 in Shawnee, IL.
A homemaker for most of her life, Joy was also employed for 15 years as a supervisor for BFI Commercial Cleaning. In her spare time, she enjoyed cooking, visiting casinos, watching movies, and playing video games with her grandkids. She will always be remembered as a caring, giving person known for her generosity.
Joy is survived by her husband Robert; three children, Eugene (Shirley) Mathus, Robert (Deborah Shaul) Mathus, and Dianna Redman, all of Monroe; five grandchildren: Tori Craft, Lindsey Mathus, Emily Mills, Ian Redman, and Tiffany Mathus; and five great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Joy was preceded in death by two sisters, Patricia Shanteau and Kay Lynch.
Family and friends may visit from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wed. Mar. 13th at Bacarella Funeral Home where services will be held Thurs. Mar. 14th at 11 a.m. Rev. Rick Massingill, pastor of North Monroe Street Church of God will officiate, followed by cremation through Roselawn Memorial Park.
Memorial donations are encouraged to the SSIHM Motherhouse in lieu of flowers.
