John Henry Vergowven, age 79, of Monroe, MI passed away Saturday, December 29, 2007 at 2:33 AM at Rivergate Terrace in Riverview, MI where he had been for the past 2 weeks. John was born February 1, 1928 in Gary, IN the son of the late Henry A. and Ethel (Murphy) Vergowven. John served his country in the US Army from May 22, 1946 to October 17, 1947. For his meritorious service John received the World War II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal. On March 4, 1949 John married Joann Kidd in Monroe, MI. John worked as an electrician for Dundee Cement for 23 years retiring in 1990. John was a life member of VFW Post 6462 in Dundee, MI. John enjoyed woodworking, walking and bowling. John was an avid University of Michigan Football fan. John also built his own home and enjoyed spending time with his family. John is survived by his ex wife Joann Lyons, 4 loving sons; Laurence E. (Susan) Vergowven of Gross Ile, MI, John A. (Beth) Vergowven of Petersburg, MI, Michael R. (Linda) Vergowven of Dearborn Heights, and Andrew J. Vergowven of San Diego, CA, 6 loving daughters; Dale A. (Mark) Baldwin of Lincoln Park, MI, Janice (Charles McLewis) Hornbeck of Kinsmen, OH, Pamela A. Gisel of Simi Valley, CA, Penny L. Johnson of Monroe, MI, Mary B. (Roy) Prater of Newport, MI and Diane M. Vergowven of Trenton, MI, a brother Robert (Edith) Vergowven of Iron Mountain, MI, 22 cherished grandchildren and 17 cherished great grandchildren. In addition to his parents John was preceded in death by an infant daughter Karen Sue Vergowven in 1960 and a sister Betty Vergowven. Visitation will be held from 1-8 PM Sunday in the Bacarella Funeral Home where funeral services celebrating his life will be held on Monday, December 31, 2007 at 10:00 AM. Fr. Robert C. Mossett pastor of St. Anne's Catholic Church will officiate. Military interment services will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park under the auspices of VFW Post 1138. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donors' choice.
