John Henry "Big John" Gibson, age 82 of Monroe, MI passed away on Sunday, April 18, 2010 at 3:30 PM in Mercy Memorial Hospital. Born May 25, 1927 in Arthur, TN, John was the son of the late Henry Clay and Evelyn (Carroll) Gibson. In 1945 also in Arthur, TN, John married the former Lois Bussell. John served his country during WWII in the US Army Air Force. John moved to Monroe in 1953. John worked for many years at the General Motors Fisher Body Plant in Detroit, from which he retired. John was a member of Grape Missionary Baptist Church. John enjoyed many things in life, traveling down south, rock collecting, fishing, his animals, and perhaps nothing gave him more joy than volunteering and giving back to the community. He rang the bell and delivered food every year around Christmas for the Salvation Army and picked up donated items for the Damascus House. John also enjoyed his many friends and his family. John is survived by his 6 loving children; Ronnie R. (Janie) Gibson of Monroe, Phillip (Judy) Gibson of Monroe, Kenneth (Violet) Gibson of LaSalle, Sarah F. Essary of Monroe, Evelyn D. Ray of Monroe and Donna F. Brewer whom he made his home with, 10 cherished grandchildren, 20 treasured great grandchildren and 5 precious great great grandchildren, and a sister Sophia Wheatley of Arthur, TN. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his step mother Dicey Gibson, a grandson, Phillip Scott Gibson, a son in law Charles Essary and a brother Bill Gibson. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 1-8 PM in the Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 S. Telegraph Rd. in Monroe, 734-241-4600, where funeral services celebrating his life will be held on Thursday, April 22, 2010 at 11:00 AM. The VFW Post 1138 will conduct military honors at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be given to John's family.
