Joe S. Shiflet, age 92 of Monroe, passed away Monday morning, June 13, 2022 in his home.
Born December 24, 1929 in Monroe, Joe was the son of the late Roy and Ollie (Brewer) Shiflet. His family moved to Tennessee where he graduated from Powell Valley High School in Speedwell. He served in the U.S. Army from December 5, 1950 until being honorably discharged on November 29, 1952. Five months later, Joe married Bonnie F. McCarty on April 18, 1953 in Monroe.
Joe originally worked for River Raisin Paper Company in Monroe and then for Nationwide Insurance Company. He then was employed by Monroe Public Schools for many years as a custodian, retiring in 1995.
Joe was a member of Stewart Road Church of God, Monroe VFW Post 1138, and American Legion Post 40.
Joe is survived by his wife of 69 years, Bonnie Shiflet; three daughters, Eva (Rev. Mark) Wellhousen, Gail (Bill) Sunderland, and Betsy (Scott) Shappee, all of Monroe; four siblings, Harold Shiflet of Tazewell, TN, Madeline (Hugh) Roe of Kokomo, IN, Wilma Carter of Speedwell, TN, and Jim (Ellen) Shiflet of Franklin, WI; seven grandchildren: Andrea (Tim Elek) Umfress, Autumn (Brad) Schneider, Jacqueline Sunderland, Robert Sunderland, Thomas (Ivan Vega) Sunderland, Ashley (Josh) Runals, Alex Wellhousen; five great-grandsons: Stephan Umfress, Jacob (Abigail) Schneider, Andrew Schneider, Henrik Wagel, and Miles Wagel.
In addition to his parents, Joe was also preceded in death by a son, Emery; stillborn daughter, Karen; and 16 siblings.
Family and friends may visit from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, June 17th at Bacarella Funeral Home where services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday. Joe's son-in-law, Rev. Mark Wellhousen, pastor of Carleton Church of God, will officiate along with military honors provided by Monroe VFW Post 1138. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park. Memorial donations are suggested to Disabled American Veterans.
