Jo Ann “Mikie” Kunich, born November 1, 1949, in the Ironville neighborhood of Toledo, Ohio, passed away on September 13, 2026. She lived her life with a huge heart, a sharp sense of humor, and absolutely no confusion about whether or not she liked someone. She was affectionately known as Mikie, a nickname given to her by her father that stayed with her throughout her life.

   If Mikie liked you, she loved you completely. If she didn’t—well, she was never one to leave you wondering.

   Mikie loved animals, especially Weimaraners, and spent part of her working life at the zoo—possibly one of the few places where the animals were easier to manage than the people. She also worked as a therapeutic massage therapist and at the Monroe, Michigan Senior Citizen Center, where her caring nature, humor, and unmistakable personality undoubtedly made a lasting impression.

   She was a devoted Detroit Tigers fan who traveled to Florida many times for spring training. Whether the Tigers won or lost, Mikie remained loyal—although she probably had a few colorful suggestions for the players and coaches.

   When she wasn’t watching baseball, Mikie enjoyed bingo, shopping, Marvel superhero movies, and trips to Las Vegas, where she happily played the slot machines and waited for the jackpot she clearly deserved. Her life had its own soundtrack, preferably played loudly and by her favorite band, AC/DC.

   Mikie was also fascinated by ghosts, haunted places, and all things paranormal. Considering her curiosity and sense of adventure, no one should be surprised if she is already exploring the other side—or decides to stop by occasionally just to make sure everyone is behaving.

   Mikie was preceded in death by her parents, Mary and Edward Kunich; her brothers, Thomas “Butch” Kunich and William “Cook” Kunich; and her beloved fur baby, Dudley the Weimaraner, who undoubtedly held the title of Mikie’s all-time favorite.

   She is survived by her sister-in-law, Helen Kunich, and her two best friends, Val Bezeau and Brenda Gray. She will also be seriously missed by Hank the dog, who was wise enough to know that being one of Mikie’s favorites was a very special place to be.

   Mikie loved to laugh and had a wonderful sense of humor. She lived honestly, loved fiercely, spoke her mind, and never wasted much time pretending to be someone she wasn’t. She will be deeply missed by the people and animals fortunate enough to earn a place in her heart.

   Cremation has taken place, and no formal services will be held. A memorial dinner celebrating Mikie’s life will be held at a future date. Those wishing to honor her memory may make a donation to the Humane Society or the Monroe Senior Center in Monroe, Michigan.

   In Mikie’s honor, play some AC/DC, cheer for the Tigers, pet a dog, buy something you probably don’t need, and put a few dollars into a slot machine. If it pays off, Mikie would expect a share.
