James A. Staelgraeve, 79, of Lambertville, MI, passed away on Friday, February 14, 2025, at Hampton Manor of Bedford.
Born on August 24, 1945, in Monroe, MI, Jim was the son of the late Victor and Helena (VanDamme) Staelgraeve. He was a 1964 graduate of Monroe High School and a lifelong member of St. Mary Catholic Church.
On August 21, 1965, Jim married Jan Lanphere, who preceded him in death in October 2001. On April 28, 2007, he married Melissa Niese, and together they blended their families, creating cherished memories of love and laughter.
Jim, along with his brothers Chuck and Rich, were the proud owners of North Monroe Greenhouse, a family business founded in 1939 by their parents. The business, which provided fresh flowers, plants, nursery products, and landscape services was passed down to Jim and his brothers, who continued its legacy until their retirement in 2007. Jim was known for always going above and beyond in both the daily moments with his customers and in the dedication he showed to the success of the greenhouse. His work ethic and commitment to ensuring everyone was happy earned him the love and respect of his family, friends, and community.
Jim had a passion for tennis and played the sport for over 40 years. Whether on the court with friends or as part of a competitive game, tennis was one of his greatest joys. He also enjoyed spending time outdoors, whether at the family cottage or walking in nature. Above all, he cherished his time with his family, who will miss him dearly.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Melissa Staelgraeve; two children, Julie (Allen) Stein of Monroe and Jonathon (Cathy) Staelgraeve of Northville; three stepchildren, Heather Shaw of Charleston, SC, Elizabeth (John) Asbury of Toledo, and Kathryn (Neil) Fahrer of Lambertville; fourteen grandchildren: Ryan and Megan Staelgraeve, Kaylee and Kelsey Stein, Joseph and Zachary Staelgraeve, Judi, Julian, Aiden, and Rivers Shaw, Keaton Asbury, Olivia, Alaina, and Adalynn Fahrer.
In addition to his first wife, Jan, Jim was preceded in death by his parents; his three brothers, Richard, Charles, and Daniel Staelgraeve; his son, James A. Staelgraeve II; his grandson, Korey Knowles; and his daughter-in-law, Sonja Staelgraeve.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 20, 2025, from 2 to 8 p.m. at Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 S. Telegraph Rd., Monroe. He will lie in state at 10 a.m. on Friday, February 21, 2025, at St. Mary Catholic Church, with Mass at 11 a.m. Rev. Brian Chabala will officiate.
