James Arthur Runyon, Age 90, of Monroe, passed away Tuesday, July 28, 2026 at Corewell Health, Trenton.
James was born July 19, 1936 in Monroe, he was the son of Hershal and Mildred (Bressler) Runyon. After his father passed he was raised by his mother and stepfather, Lennis Savage. He married the love of his life Barbara Ellen Vick June 23, 1962 at St. Mary Catholic Church.
He attended Monroe High School before proudly serving his country in the US Army from Aug 17, 1954 until his honorable discharge August 16, 1957.
Jim belonged to Faith Lutheran Church for many years before its closing, he then became a faithful and devoted member of Zion Lutheran Church.
Jim and his wife started Runyon’s Carpet Sales and Installation Inc. in 1964, which grew into Runyon’s Home Decorating. It is still in business today, run by the second generation as Runyon’s Furniture, Flooring and Mattress. They also started B&B Property management in 1970 which they operated for many years.
He enjoyed golfing, bowling, traveling, baseball, going to their cottage, deer hunting, motorcycling and especially spending time with his family.
Jim is survived by his wife of 64 years, Barbara; two children, Kelly Jeanne (Dean) Castiglione of Monroe and Tony Patrick (Courtney) Runyon of Newport; big sister, Nancy Souva; grandchildren, Janea Carter, Tyler Castiglione, Brady Runyon, Brennan Runyon, Braelyn Runyon, Brexton Runyon, Brolan Runyon and Breklyn Runyon; four great-grandchildren, Garrett Carter, McKenzie Carter, Harper Castiglione and Blake Castiglione and many nieces and nephews and their families.
He is preceded in death by his parents; stepfather; son, James Arthur Runyon, Jr.; siblings, Bob Savage, Lennis Savage, Jr., Neil Runyon and Karen Smeltzer.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, August 4, 2026 from 3 to 7 p.m. at Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 S. Telegraph Rd., Monroe. He will lie instate Wednesday, August 5, at 10 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church with funeral services at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Monroe, with military honors provided by VFW Post 1138, Monroe.
The family suggests memorial contributions in Jim’s memory be made to Zion Lutheran Church and School.
