Obituary

James J. Ritchey, age 78 of Monroe, passed away Sunday, May 24, 2026 at ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital, surrounded with love by his wife and daughters.

Born December 20, 1947 in Toledo, OH, Jim was the son of the late Robert and Jeannine (Dusseau) Ritchey.

Jim graduated from Mason Consolidated High School in 1965 and honorably served his country during the Vietnam War. He served in the U.S. Army from Aug. 15, 1967 to July 21, 1969. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Air Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, and the Bronze Star with Valor for his heroism and bravery in combat.

On August 30, 1969, Jim married the love of his life, Deborah L. Pelz at St. John Catholic Church in Toledo, OH. Together they raised their two daughters, Jolyn and Danette.

Jim had a long career with Ford Motor Company. He was employed for 40 years at the Rawsonville Plant in Ypsilanti, MI, retiring in 2006 as a Production Supervisor.

Jim attended St. Mary Catholic Church with his wife and daughters. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, deer hunting, boating, trips to casinos, and spending time with his granddaughters. One of his favorite pastimes was hanging out with family and friends at Jerry’s Frenchtown Bar playing Keno.

Jim is survived by his wife of 56 years, Debbie Ritchey; two daughters, Jolyn (James Laney, Jr.) Gilstorf of Monroe, MI and Danette (Robert) Catana of Harrison Twp., MI; two siblings, David (Sanch) Ritchey of Winter Springs, FL and Cathy (Jeff) Welch of Rossford, OH; and his three beloved granddaughters: Jaiden Gilstorf, Katelyn Catana, and Avrie Catana.

In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his brother, Roger Ritchey.

Family and friends may visit from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, June 1st at Bacarella Funeral Home where services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Deacon Mike Stewart will officiate along with military honors provided by Monroe VFW Post 1138. Cremation will follow in accordance with Jim’s wishes.
