James W. Mitchell, 63, of Flat Rock, passed away in his home at 12:44 PM, Thursday, September 27, 2007. He had been in poor health since 1995. James was born on December 26, 1943 in Knoxville, TN to William and Dorothy (Cox) Mitchell. On June 29, 1963 he married Carolyn Ellison in Knoxville, they moved to the area in 1967 from Knoxville. A journeyman electrician, he had at one time worked for Detroit Stoker, Guardian Glass, and retired from Howmet Corporation in 1999. James was a member of the True Gospel Missionary Baptist Church, was a graduate of Halls High School, Knoxville, had attended Monroe County Community College, and received his associate's degree from Henry Ford Community College. An avid reader, he enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, his yard work, and spending time outdoors. He will be missed by family; wife, Carolyn, mother, Dorothy West of Maynardville, TN, children, Todd (Julie) Mitchell of Flat Rock and Kimberly Mitchell of Belleville, grandchildren, Alan Mitchell, Jon and Nick Griffiths, and Lainey Strahm, and his brother, David (Pat) West and sister, Faye (Ken) Hodge, both of Knoxville, TN. Sadly, his father, stepfather, Oatie West, and a brother, Roy West, preceded him in death. Friends may call at the Bacarella Funeral Home on Saturday from 4-8 PM and Sunday from 1-8 PM. Funeral service commemorating his life will be held at the funeral home at 11 AM Monday, with burial following at Huron Valley Cemetery, Flat Rock. The Revs. Danny Hawkins and John Bussell will officiate.
