Obituary

James E. Calloway, age 78, a lifelong resident of Monroe, MI passed away, Thursday, October 16, 2008 in his home with his family at his bedside. Jim had been seriously ill for the past 7 months. Jim was born May 23, 1930 in Monroe the son of the late Robert Lee and Hattie Mae (Jones) Calloway. Jim was a 1949 graduate of Monroe High School, he also attended Monroe County Community College and attended various colleges around the country to enhance his career. Jim served his country during the Korean War in the US Air Force enlisting on January 3, 1951 and serving until January 14, 1952. On June 18, 1960 Jim married his beloved wife the former Mary Ann Carr in Toledo, OH. Jim began his career at the Monroe Evening News in 1950 working in the Advertising Department. Upon his discharge from his service in the Air Force, Jim returned to the Monroe Evening News as a retail and classified salesman. Jim continued as a salesman until 1956 when he assumed additional duties as a Credit Manager. In 1971 Jim was appointed Assistant Advertising Manager. In 1978 he was appointed Assistant Business Manager then in 1980 he advanced to Business Manager. Jim worked a total of 47 years for the Monroe Evening News. He retired in July of 1997. Jim was a member of Redeemer Fellowship Church where he served in many capacities including; usher, teller and financial advisor, he also served on the board of directors and was a member of the building committee. Jim's other membership's included; Inland Daily Press Association, American Newspaper Publishers Association, National Advertising Executives Association, Michigan Press Association, Michigan League of home Dailies, Monroe County Chamber Of Commerce, Michigan United Conservation Clubs, American Press Institute, National Newspaper Association, International Newspaper Advertising and Marketing Executives, and the United Fund. Jim's hobbies included; bowling, traveling, hunting, working on automobiles, and yard work. He also loved camping. Jim was quite the handyman and enjoyed keeping busy while working around the house. Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years Mary Ann, 3 loving children; Thomas J. (Linda) Calloway of Temperance, MI, Jennifer J. (Thomas) Caligiuri of Plano, TX and Sharon K. (George) Barath of Monroe, 4 cherished grandchildren and 2 treasured great grandchildren. In addition to his parents Jim was preceded in death by his brother John Calloway. Visitation will be held on Monday from 1-8 PM in the Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 S. Telegraph Rd. in Monroe. On Tuesday, October 22, 2008 he will lie in state from 10:00 AM until funeral services celebrating his life at 11:00 AM at Redeemer Fellowship Church in Monroe. The Rev. John Piippo and the Rev. Joseph Atkinson will officiate. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park where the VFW Post 1138 will conduct military honors. Memorial contributions may be made to Mercy Memorial Hospice of Monroe or the National Kidney Foundation.
