Iona Riggs, age 81 of Monroe, passed away Sunday, January 9, 2022 at St. Anne Hospital, Toledo, OH. She had been in declining health for the past six months.
Born November 19, 1940 in Garrett, KY, Iona was the daughter of the late Eugene and Flossie (Conley) McPeek. She graduated from Monroe High School in 1959 and married James B. Riggs on August 1st in Monroe. Sadly, he preceded her in death on July 26, 2017.
As a young lady, Iona worked at Kresge's and K-Mart department stores in Monroe. She then began a long career at Memorial and Mercy Memorial Hospitals, retiring after 34 years of employment as a dietary clerk.
Without question, Iona lived for her children and grandchildren. She supported them in their activities and sporting events, wherever they took her. She was an avid Detroit Tigers Baseball fan, enjoyed playing Bingo, and was well known for her baking of Christmas cookies which she generously shared with many.
Iona is survived by her five children: Robin Riggs of Sylvania, OH, James (Mary Kay) Riggs, Michelle (Marty) Farris, Jeff (Cheri) Riggs, and Jason Riggs, all of Monroe; Her beloved grandchildren, Nichole (Adam) Price, Jeremy (Lindsey) Riggs, Joshua (Melissa) Riggs, Mark (Melissa) Bourbina, Joey (Betsy) Bussdieker, Jerid Riggs, Justin (Ashley) Riggs, Megan (Riley) Robinson, Drake Riggs, Preslie Riggs, and Abby Wirick; her cherished great-grandchildren, Mikenzy Bourbina, Maddin Bourbina, Dane Buehler, Drew Buehler, Drake Buehler, Stella Price, Tessa Price, Jaxson VanWasshenova, Henley Riggs, Payton Riggs, and Brady Riggs; two siblings, Charles (Ruth) McPeek and Joan Hudkins, both of Monroe.
Iona was preceded in death by her father Eugene McPeek; and her mother and step-father, Flossie and Lindsie Hunt.
Family and friends may visit from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 13th at Bacarella Funeral Home where services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday. Rev. Spencer Snow, Associate Pastor at Monroe Missionary Baptist Church will officiate. Cremation will follow with private interment at Roselawn Memorial Park at a later date.
