Obituary

Lifelong Monroe resident Howard Arthur Servey, 79, passed away peacefully with his daughter at his bedside on Saturday, February 18, 2023, in Toledo, Ohio, where he had been seriously ill since November 2022. Howard suffered from dystonia and prostate cancer, and he was in the care of SouthernCare Hospice at Alexis Gardens for three months prior to his passing and provided loving care by Senior Helpers of Northwest Ohio since March 2020.

Born November 10, 1943 in Monroe, Howard was the youngest son of the late Charles and Marcella (Hivon) Servey. He attended Monroe High School and served in the Army from 1960-1963, during which he was stationed in Germany on radar duty. After thirty years of employment, he retired from Chrysler Trenton Engine, where he worked as a gauge technician. In addition, he worked thousands of hours as a volunteer for the Crisis Center of Monroe, taking emergency calls and training other volunteers, eventually earning a social work credential.

Howard was blessed with two marriages to two beautiful wives; first, he was married to Jennifer Gale (Goss) Bauer of Monroe, with whom he had two daughters; in 1984, he married his second wife, Patsy Lynn (Carroll) Servey, from whom he separated in 2019.

Howard was a hardworking provider for his family, and in his spare time, he had two passions: jogging and writing. He ran countless community races and five Detroit Free Press marathons, even earning the time needed to qualify for the Boston Marathon. In addition, he was a serious poet, songwriter, and short story writer; he was known for publishing his poems in the Monroe County Library System's annual poetry anthologies and writing special poems inspired by and for the people he loved. He was a yoga instructor at Airport High School, adult education, in his younger years, as well. In short, he was an interesting, determined, humble man who explored the mind-body connection through exercise and found artistic outlets to express himself through his writing.

Howard is survived by both of his former spouses, his two daughters, Stacy Alayne (Daniel) Lehr of Monroe and Kristin Nicole (Robert) Weaver of Frederick, Maryland; one beloved brother and sister-in-law, Brian and Connie Servey of Almond, Wisconsin; four grandchildren, Ryan James (Lauren) Lehr of Dayton, Ohio, Rachel Alayne (Chuck) Lehr of Monroe, William Robert Collis II of Tacoma, Washington, and Audrey Taryn Collis of Frederick, Maryland; and one great-grandchild, Madison Alayne Riffle of Monroe, Michigan. In addition, he is survived by his lifelong best friends, Joyce and Doug Skinner of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and many fellow residents and special friends at Alexis Gardens in Toledo, Ohio. He was preceded in death by both parents, one sister, and five brothers.

Howard was interred at Roselawn Memorial Park next to his mother and father, and a private service in the Roselawn Chapel took place prior to his interment. Online condolences and special memories may be shared with the family by visiting the obituary page at www.bacarellafuneralhome.com .
