Herbert L. Schmidt, age 75 of LaSalle passed Sunday, July 19, 2009 with his loving family by his side. He had been in declining health for the past 3 years and has recently suffered a serious fall. Herbert was born May 9, 1934 in Monroe to Hugo and Ada (Moore) Schmidt. He married the love of his life, Bonnie Zula (Swanson) on December 19, 1953, in Erie, MI. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 1-8 PM in the Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 S. Telegraph Rd. in Monroe, where funeral services celebrating his life will be on Wednesday, July 22, 2009 at 11:00 AM. Pastor John Fultz of Suder Ave Baptist Church will officiate. Herb worked at the Detroit Edison Monroe Power Plant for 16 years, retiring in 1995. Prior to that he worked 15 years for the Hun-Ray Tower Company in Monroe. He installed several types of tower equipment throughout Michigan including the Monroe County Sheriff's communication tower in Ida, MI in 1974. Herb was known for always helping family, friends and neighbors. You could always find him under a car hood, mowing grass or plowing snow whether he was asked for help or not. He also enjoyed CB radio's and flea market shopping for years. In his earlier years his love of motorcycles shown in his Harley Davidson's and Indian bikes. After retirement Herb and Bonnie enjoyed spending their winter months in sunny Belleview, FL. Herb was blessed with two daughters, Kim Hacker of Monroe and Penny (Patrick) Emerson of La Salle, MI. Five grandchildren, Angela (Anthony) Stokes of Alpharetta, GA, Jessica Hacker of Taylor, MI, Casey (Russell) Perrin of Cullman, AL, Taryn Minton of Sylvania, OH, and Kenneth Emerson of La Salle, MI. One great-granddaughter, Arionna Hacker of Alpharetta, GA, a brother; Clarence (Marilyn) Schmidt of Maumee, OH, a sister; Margie Evans of Monroe, and many nieces and nephews.
