Obituary

Herbert L. "Herb" Meyer, age 87 of Carleton, passed away Sunday morning, May 8, 2022 at Wellspring Lutheran Home.
Born March 3, 1935 in Carleton, Herb was the son of the late Albert and Elizabeth (Liptow) Meyer. He attended St. Patrick Grade School and was a 1954 graduate of Airport High School.
Herb served in the U.S. Army from September 15, 1954 to August 30, 1956 and later married Mariann Wickenheiser on April 16, 1963 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Carleton. They were joined in marriage by then pastor, Rev. Fr. Howard Hungerford. Together, they raised four children.
Herb had a long working career with American Airlines at Detroit Metro Airport in Romulus. He was employed as a Ramp Service Crew Chief and after 36 years, he took a medical retirement in 1994.
Herb was an active life member of Divine Grace Parish, Carleton Campus, where he served on festival committees, as an usher, money counter, and coached softball. He was also a member of Moose Lodge 884, AARP, and Carleton Umpires Association.
Herb was active in sports his entire life. As a player, coach, manager, or umpire, he had a passion for softball. He played or managed over 30 teams including SMCC Girls Softball as Assistant Coach. He enjoyed attending other SMCC sporting events as well as many other grade school and high school games.
Herb is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mariann Meyer; two sons, Todd (Karen) Meyer and Roger Meyer, both of Monroe; two daughters, Dawn (Dick) Hadley and Shawna Meyer, also of Monroe; four grandchildren: Corin Hadley, Kayla (Brian) Knapp, Kyle (Cloe) Hadley, and Trevor (Mary) Meyer; nine great-grandchildren; four sisters, Ilah Mae Brancheau of Newport, Donna Kelley of Temperance, Pat Schassberger of Monroe, and Lorena Guthrie of Monroe; sister-in-law, Marie Meyer of Carleton; and brother-in-law, John Naszradi of Novi, MI;
In addition to his parents, Herb was also preceded in death by a sister, Genevieve Naszradi; brother, Laverne "Bing" Meyer; and brothers-in-law, Floyd Brancheau, John Kelley, Harry Schassberger, and Clyde Guthrie.
Family and friends may visit from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 12th at Bacarella Funeral Home where the Rosary will be recited at 5 p.m. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at Divine Grace Parish, Carleton Campus. The church pastor, Rev. Fr. Michael Woroniewicz will officiate followed by burial at St. Patrick Cemetery with military honors provided by Monroe VFW Post 1138.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to any of the following charities: Divine Grace Parish, SMCC Athletic Department, ProMedica Hospice, or Elm House.
