Gunhild M. "Gunny" Olson, age 91, of Monroe, passed away Saturday, October 14, 2023 surrounded by family in her home under the care of hospice.
Gunhild was born February 10, 1932 in Evanston, Illinois. She was the daughter of Ernfrid and Gudrun (Edwardson) Carlson. She married the love of her life, Ward F. "Coach" Olson September 5, 1953 in Wilmette, IL; he preceded her in death on August 29, 2023, just shy of their 70th wedding anniversary.
She was a 1950 graduate of New Trier High School in Winnetka, IL; she also attended Northwestern University and received her registered Nursing degree from Ravenswood Nursing School in Cook County, IL. She was an RN and surgical supervisor for 38 years, working at Mercy Memorial Hospital. She also worked as the director of nursing at Frenchtown Convalescent Center before her retirement in 1990.
Gunny was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Monroe where she served as a deacon, sang in the choir and taught Sunday school. She was also involved with Faculty Wives, Thrift Shop of Monroe, Monroe Community Players and Order of the Eastern Star. Gunny was a member of Sweet Adeline's International since 1972 and sang in Toledo Seaway, Pride of Toledo and Spirit of Detroit.
After she and Coach retired, they enjoyed spending the winters at The Sandpiper Beacon Beach Resort in Panama City Beach, Florida and spent their summers up north in Lewiston Michigan on Tee Lake.
She is survived by her loving family; five daughters Nancy (Kevin) Schlosser, Kathryn Olson, Tamela (Rusty) Moore all residing in Monroe; Also, Karen (Kevin) Morgan of The Woodlands Texas and Krista (Richard) Moran of Woodstock GA; nine grandchildren; Kyle (Hailey) Schlosser and Kurt Schlosser, Taylor (Mark) Duker and Nicole Morgan, Erich and Meghan Moran, Garrett, Mitchell and Elliott Moore. Gunny was blessed with two great grandchildren, Ayden Duker and Charlie Schlosser. In addition to her husband, she is proceeded in death by her parents, Ernfrid and Gudrun (Edwardson) Carlson and one grandchild, Kevin Michael Schlosser.
Friends may call Sunday, October 22nd, 2023 from 3pm to 8pm at Bacarella Funeral Home 1201 S. Telegraph Road, Monroe MI. Services will be held at 11am, Monday, October 23rd also at the funeral home. Entombment will be private at the convenience of the family.
