Glenn Morgan

Glenn T. Morgan, age 90, of Monroe, MI passed away, Monday, December 8, 2008 in his home surrounded by his loving family. Glenn was born June 3, 1918 in Dover, OH the son of the late Thomas J. and Christina Marie (Yockey) Morgan. In 1932 the family moved to Monroe. Glenn attended Monroe Public Schools and was a 1936 graduate of Monroe High School where he was the manager for the track, football, basketball and the swim teams. Glenn started working at the River Raisin Paper Company, later bought by Union Camp Paper Corp. working there a total of 46½ years until his retirement in November of 1982. While working Glenn completed a course and graduated from Dale Carnegie Business School. Also his company selected him to participate in a community wide committee to discuss and obtain information on the feasibility of organizing a YMCA for the City of Monroe. Also during his tenure of employment Glenn was the Secretary/Treasurer of the AFL-CIO Local 132 for several years. In the Union Camp Corp Bowling League, he was the Secretary/ Treasurer for 35 years and active in the company golf League as well. After retiring Glenn was active in senior bowling and golf leagues. He was also a member of Frenchtown and Monroe Senior Citizens. On January 24, 1942 Glenn married his beloved wife the former Maxine Soncrant at the 1st United Methodist Church in Monroe. The Rev. W.P. Peck performed the ceremony. In 1992 they celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary. This year they celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary with many happy years. Glenn was a WWII veteran serving his country as a Staff Sergeant in the US Army Air Corps from August 5, 1941 to September 5, 1945. Glenn was a crew chief of a P-47 Thunderbolt Fighter Plane in the famous 56th Fighter Group. He was awarded a Bronze Star, which was pinned on by Gen. Auton because his plane flew in excess of 300 combat hours without having to come back early abortive. Other medals included European – African Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal, American Defense Service Medal, Distinguished Unit Citation with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Good Conduct Medal and four Overseas Service Bars. Glenn joined Calvary United Methodist Church in 1934 and was a Sunday School Teacher for 43 years. For many of those years he was the Sunday School Superintendent. He was also a past president of the men’s group. Glenn was also a life member of the VFW Post 1138. Glenn is survived by his beloved wife Maxine, 3 loving children; Dale W. (Theresa) Morgan of Monroe, Paul J. (Julie) Morgan of Rockwood, MI and Sharon L. (James) Ellerman of Monroe, 5 cherished grandchildren and 2 cherished great grandchildren. In addition to his parents Glenn was preceded in death by his brother William Morgan and his sister Elizabeth Morgan. Visitation will held on Thursday in the Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 S. Telegraph Rd. in Monroe, from 1-8 PM. On Friday, December 12, 2008 he will lie in state at Calvary United Methodist Church from 9:00 AM until funeral services celebrating his life at 10:00 AM. The Rev. William Kreichbaum will officiate. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park where the VFW Post 1138 will conduct military honors. Memorial contributions may be given to Calvary United Methodist Church.
