Obituary

George G. Schmeling, 84 years of Monroe, MI passed away Monday, May 31, 2010 in his home.
George was born October 20, 1925 in Berwyn, IL the son of the late George Gustav and Emily (Rosekilde) Schmeling. George moved to Monroe in 1949.
George served his country honorably and proudly in the US Navy during WWII.
On June 6, 1953 at the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Taylor, MI George married his beautiful wife the former Velma Pauline Fegan. Sadly, she preceded him in death on August 23, 1994 after 41 years of marriage. George resided in Detroit Beach for 50 years.
George worked as a truck driver for Ford Motor Company, Great Lakes Trucking and for Jones Transfer in Monroe from which he retired in November of 1982.
George was a member of the VFW Post 1138, an active and life member of the Teamsters local 299, a past member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Arie 2254, past member of the Detroit Beach Boat Club and the Moose Lodge #884. He enjoyed bowling at Nortel Lanes for over 30 years and was a past officer and member of the Greater Monroe Bowling Association.
George was a loving husband, father, grandpa and great grandpa, He will be sadly missed but, NEVER forgotten! George is survived by 3 loving children; Matthew G. Schmeling of Livonia, MI, Jamie Ellen Thompson and Donnie L. (Amanda) McCoy both of Monroe, 5 cherished grandchildren; Alex, Joey, Abby, Paul and Tim and 3 treasured great grandchildren Xzander McCoy, MIranda A. and Ava M. Prieur. In addition to his wife and parents George was preceded in death by a son Max George Schmeling on August 10, 1957, a granddaughter; Jamie L. Thompson, a daughter in law Patti Schmeling and 3 sisters; Doris Blackwell, Georgia Law, and Evelyn Patz.
George's family will receive friends in the Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 S. Telegraph Rd., in Monroe on Friday from 12 noon until a memorial service celebrating his life at 1:00 PM. Allen Mieden Chaplain of the VFW Post 1138 will officiate. A procession will follow to Roselawn Memorial Park where the VFW Post 1138 will conduct military honors. Memorial contributions are suggested to the VFW Post 1138.
