Obituary

Gary C. Sortor, age 77 of Monroe, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 30, 2024 at home with his family by his side, after courageously battling ALS for the past 2 years.

Born October 31, 1946 in Monroe, Gary was the son of the late Gilbert and Florabell (Miller) Sortor. He graduated from Monroe High School in 1965 and married the love of his life, Almira K. "Sis" Standifer, on May 6, 1967, at Fourth St. Church of God. Their love story was a beautiful journey filled with love and laughter. The two celebrated 45 years of marriage just days before Sis's passing on May 11, 2012, after a long battle with breast cancer.

Gary dedicated 32 years of service as a Job Setter at the Chrysler Trenton Engine Plant, retiring on May 31, 1998. He was a devoted member of Moose Lodge 884 and the former Calvary United Methodist Church in Monroe, where he served as a Trustee and also initiated its food bank program, reflecting his commitment to helping others.

Gary's passions included hunting with his brothers up north, golfing, shooting pool, bowling, playing softball, and coaching both men's and women's softball teams. These activities brought him immense joy and forged many lasting friendships. Gary and Sis cherished their summer days camping in Wauseon, OH, and spending the colder months at their home in Clearwater, FL. In his later years, Gary found great joy in attending his grandchildren's sporting events and taking his beloved dog Toby on numerous adventures.

Gary is survived by two children, Bryan (Kathie) Sortor and Lisa (John Fisher) Sortor, both of Monroe; four brothers, Ronald Sortor of Curtisville, MI, Larry (Kay) Sortor of Monroe, Brad Sortor of Lewiston, MI, and Keith (Janet) Sortor of Erie, MI, and several beloved brothers and sisters in law; six grandchildren: Kiara Sortor, Bailey Rowe, Bryan (Johanna) Fisher, Alexis Sortor, Brooke Szczurek, and Imari Sortor; five great-grandchildren: Dezi, Maddyn, Jaxon, Briar, and Roman.

In addition to his parents and wife, Gary was recently preceded in death by a brother, Timothy on June 26th.

Family and friends may visit from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, July 8th at Bacarella Funeral Home where services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday. Rev. James Williams, pastor of Flat Rock Church of God will officiate followed by burial at Rath Cemetery.

Memorial donations are encouraged and suggested to ALS of Michigan, St. Jude Children's Hospital, or the American Cancer Society.
