Estel A. McNew, age 88 of Monroe, formerly of Harrison, MI, passed away Monday, January 30, 2023 at Seacrest Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Monroe. He had been in declining health for two years.
Born March 14, 1934 in Claiborne County, TN, Estel was the son of the late Robert and Stella (Keck) McNew. He attended Monroe High School and then served his country in the U.S. Army. Afterward, he met and married Jean Heimer in Harrison, Michigan where he resided for many years before returning to Monroe a couple years ago.
While living in Monroe as a young man, Estel was employed by Consolidated Paper and then later by Stevens Moving Company in Saginaw for many years. Estel was a devoted member of Moose Lodge 2235 in Harrison where he was awarded the Pilgrim Degree of Merit. Other pastimes included fishing and visiting Soaring Eagle Casino in Mt. Pleasant.
Estel is survived by four children, Marcia (Allen) Ashley of Put-In-Bay, OH, Joy Ballantyne of Monroe, Scott (Ardith) McNew of Monroe, and David (Kristine) McNew of Monroe; and nine grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Estel was preceded in death by his wife, two brothers, Edward and James McNew, and a sister, Beth Ann Parott.
Bacarella Funeral Home is assisting the family with cremation and funeral arrangements. A celebration of Estel's life will be held at a later date with family and friends.
