Obituary

Elizabeth Sarah "Betty" Maveal, age 91, of Monroe, MI passed away Saturday, January 31, 2009 at 2:05 AM at Alice Lorraine Care Center in Monroe where she resided for the past 5 years. Betty was born January 7, 1918 in Wyandotte, MI the daughter of the late Donald P. and Mary Kathleen (McEvoy) Smith. Betty was a 1937 graduate of Roosevelt High School in Wyandotte, where she was on the swim team. On July 20, 1940 Betty married her beloved husband Donald J. Maveal at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Wyandotte. Sadly, Donald preceded her in death after 65 years of marriage. The couple moved to Monroe in 1950 from Dexter, MI. Betty was a self described Household Engineer, who enjoyed taking care of everyone in her neighborhood. Betty was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Monroe where she participated in the Alter Sodality, Christian Women and assisted with record keeping of the collection. Betty was a member of the Michigan Bell Pioneers a former member of the Moose Lodge #884, a 4-H Leader, she volunteered for Heartbeat of Monroe and the Women's Shelter, both of which she made quilts for the mothers to wrap their babies in. Betty also made dolls for the children's Christmas Program at the Monroe County Historical Museum. Betty is survived by 5 loving children; Michael J. (Tiffenni A.) Maveal of Monroe, Monone Y. (Robert) Hindbaugh of Hendersonville, NC, Kathleen Jo (Gary) Dudley of Monroe, Mary C. (Dale) DeSloover of Monroe and Patricia D. (Douglas) Powers of Kingman, AZ. 1 brother Donald (Betty) Smith of Trenton, MI, 2 sisters Eileen Manor of Port Washington, WI and Margaret "Peggy" Slagle of Trenton, MI, 17 cherished grandchildren, 21 treasured great grandchildren and 1 precious great great granddaughter, and 4 great grandchildren to be born in 2009. In addition to her husband and parents, Betty was preceded in death by 2 brothers and 2 sisters. Visitation will be held on Monday from 1-8 PM in the Bacarella Funeral Home, where Sister Carmela Whitton will conduct a scripture service at 6:00 PM. On Tuesday, February 3, 2009 she will lie in state at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Monroe from 10:00 AM until Mass of the Resurrection celebrating her life at 11:00 AM. Fr. Marc Gawronski and Fr. William Fisher will concelebrate. Cremation will follow. In leiu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Heartbeat of Monroe, Monroe County Special Olympics or St. Mary's Catholic Church.
